Athens to Host the School on Protein Misfolding Diseases

12–15 October 2026 | National Hellenic Research Foundation

Athens is set to become an international hot spot for cutting-edge biomedical research as it hosts from 12 to 15 October 2026 the first-ever “Athens School of Protein Misfolding Diseases”, organized from the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) within the framework of the Horizon Europe Twinning Project “Twin4Promis”
The School will bring together an outstanding panel of internationally acclaimed scientists from leading universities and research centres across Europe, North America, and Israel.
For four days, Athens will welcome some of the world’s foremost experts whose pioneering discoveries have shaped our current understanding of protein misfolding, membrane proteins, molecular pharmacology, structural biology, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology.
Protein misfolding and aggregation lie at the heart of numerous devastating disorders, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. The School will provide an exceptional platform for exploring the latest scientific advances in the
field, from the molecular mechanisms governing protein folding and membrane protein biogenesis to innovative therapeutic approaches and emerging biotechnological applications.
Participants will have the unique opportunity to engage directly with internationally recognised leaders whose research has transformed modern biomedical science and therapeutic innovation.
Together, these internationally acclaimed researchers have made transformative contributions to protein science, structural biology, molecular pharmacology, membrane protein biology, synthetic biology, nanotechnology, computational biology, and neurodegenerative disease research.
Beyond its high-level scientific programme, the Athens School of Protein Misfolding Diseases aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, promote scientific excellence, and strengthen international research networks. Through lectures, interactive discussions, and networking opportunities, participants will exchange ideas, establish new collaborations, and contribute to advancing the understanding of protein misfolding diseases and the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.
The Athens School of Protein Misfolding Diseases represents a major milestone for the Twin4Promis Horizon Europe Twinning Project, reinforcing its mission to strengthen research excellence, international cooperation, and capacity building in the field of protein misfolding diseases. By bringing together many of the world’s foremost scientists in Athens, the School establishes Greece as an emerging hub for frontier research in protein science and biomedical innovation.
